The Harlem School of the Arts hosted its 50th year anniversary in the Grand Ballroom at The Plaza Hotel. The star-studded event recognized the achievement of artists, community leaders and activists while raising funds crucial to empowering young people from under-served communities in Harlem and throughout the city.The event took place on Monday, October 5th, 2015.
Gala honorees included Jessye Norman (Dorothy Maynor Award), Cicely Tyson (Betty Allen Lifetime Achievement Award), Alicia Keys and Keys’ mother Terria Joseph along with Kehinde Wiley were each presented with the Visionary Artist Award. Steinway & Sons CEO Micheal Sweeney and the Honorable Keith L.T. Wright received the Corporate and Civic Award respectively.
NBC 4 New York anchor David Ushery served as Master of Ceremonies alongside HSA student hosts for the evening. In attendance were Phylicia Rashad, Gloria Reuben, Tamarie Tunie, Kathleen Battle, Elain Graham and Melvin Van Peeples and a host of others. A live auction included a four-day, three-night vacation to the British Virgin Islands, a dinner for 16 guests at The Cecil & Minton’s restaurants, and a Cuban Vacation with Grammy-winning pianist and bandleader, Arturo O’Farrill and more.
The evening featured live performances by HSA students and alumni. HSA All-Stars were joined by Arturo O’Farrill for a jam session and lively musical at the finale.
